saul leiter (1923 - 2013)
Saul Leiter was born it Pittsburgh, the son of a Talmudic scholar, who wanted Saul to follow in his footsteps. At 23, Saul left theology school and moved to New York to pursue painting. He became more interested in photography when he met Pousette-Dart and W. Eugene Smith. By the 1950's he began to work in color, and had his first exhibition in and Artist's Club full of other abstract expressionists. Saul began working in fashion photography in the 70's, and had his photos published in Show, Elle, British Vogue, Queen, and Nova. Some of his early photos showed promise, and he became a well known photographer and died at the age of 89. He continued to paint and photograph throughout his life.
I love the bold colors in his street photography and the way framing is used to show a clear subject and still have lots included in each picture. taxi: 1957, package: 1960, parade: 1954, reflection: 1958, untitled: 1950, carmen: 1960, ana: 1950, snow: 1950, man in straw hat: 1955, jean pierson: 1960, shopper: 1953, walk with soamies: 1958 |
